ST. THOMAS HAM & OYSTER DINNER - ELECTION DAY 2011

I grew up going to this dinner. It is a real gem!

This was sent in by a blog reader Lenore Liddell:

Our oyster and ham dinner also features pepper cabbage, potato salad and baked beans, rolls and butter pats, ketchup and horseradish. We make 75 each apple and pumpkin pies, from scratch, which are offered as dessert, unless you prefer cakes, which are donated from our parishioners. We bake the hams with pineapple and brown sugar. We boil and make the potato salad and pepper cabbage ourselves. We still serve on real crockery, real cutlery, and have white placemats and lacy but plastic tablecloths. We serve dinner from 1 PM until 6:15 or so, when the oysters run out.

Of course our most loyal customers are the oldest ones of our population. We have a few that come in from Pennsylvania and Delaware every year.

Our 1950's era Parish Hall holds about 14 tables, and we seat 8 to a table.

November 12th OysterFest to feature great food and a premier South Jersey Art auction
OysterFest 2010: An Oyster Feast and More!, a fund-raising dinner for Bayshore Discovery Project, home of New Jersey's Tall Ship A.J. MEERWALD, will be held in the Grand Ballroom at the Centerton Country Club in Pittsgrove on Friday Nov. 12th.

OysterFest's sumptuous land and sea buffet will include delicious appetizers, spectacular oyster and seafood entrees, carving stations and plenty of other landlubber fare, and awesome desserts.

The evening begins at 6:00 p.m. with cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and music by members of the Good Tymes Band. Dinner starts at 7:15 p.m., with dancing to Good Tymes to follow. A cash bar will be open throughout the evening.

OysterFest's extraordinary silent auction will feature the work of some of South Jersey's best-known artists and craftspeople. Review: Calvary United Methodist Ham and Oyster Dinner 10/4/2008

Today I finally attended the Calvary United Methodist Ham and Oyster Dinner in Queenstown, MD. I brought Andrew along with me as we both have a great love for oysters and he has never attended a traditional oyster dinner. I have been eager to try this particular dinner since I saw an advert for it two years ago as it mentioned "Maryland Beaten Biscuits."

I don't know how I have gone this long without trying a Maryland Beaten Biscuit; I went to college in Chestertown for goodness sakes! And my mom has been telling me this story about them since before I can remember: apparently in the mid-20th century an African American man would go house to house and beat the biscuit dough for the ladies of Chestertown. Being the time period it was, these women would not allow the man to touch the dough; they would turn it and he would beat it. This story seemed unbelievable to me but now seems totally plausable considering the time period.

I am pretty sure that they did not have the biscuits I was seeking but the rolls they did have were delicious. And the oysters were out of this world - people were enjoying them so much that they had to go buy more quarts of oysters around 5:45!

The family style seating always lends itself to making new friends. My tablemate Kay introduced me to the kind Mr. Jim Lewis (last photo) who was so nice to give me some of his secret breading mixture (which was a lot like tempura) to take home to make my own oysters! Thank you Jim!

The church holds dinners the first weekend in October and the last weekend in March. And the oyster cooking team often goes to neighboring communities to assist with their oyster dinners. I believe they mentioned one in Price, MD at the end of October.

I also learned from tablemates that the Grasonville VFW has oysters every weekend from the fall through spring! Eat 'em up folks!

The Women of St. James' Parish in Lothian, Maryland are having their
annual Oyster and Ham Dinner and festival on Saturday October 6th from

Expertly prepared by Chef Bill Reim, the dinner will feature traditional deep fried oysters with tartar and cocktail sauce, chicken and potato salad, coleslaw, sliced tomatoes, dinner rolls, coffee, iced tea and dessert. The shellfish became a popular part of Southern New Jersey tourism as early as 1801. Early Cape Island proprietor Ellis Hughes summarized the draw of Cape May in a Philadelphia newspaper as a haven for visitors who wished to "bathe in the sea, dine on oysters and fish, and drink fine liquors."

,WOXALL — Drive to this tiny town in Upper Salford on Saturday
afternoon and you'll no doubt find the Rev. Bill Gaydos at his usual
post, shucking oysters under one of the picnic pavilions at the Old
Goshenhoppen Reformed United Church of Christ.

He and his crack team of shuckers will be shelling out 2,000 raw
oysters (and serving up an additional 8,000 of the popular fried and
stewed varieties) to locals and out-of-towners as part of the church's
annual oyster picnic fundraiser — a tasty, time-honored tradition for
the past 131 years.

An estimated 1,200 people converged here last year to enjoy the food,
live music and festivities. Gaydos expects as many, if not more, this
Saturday (or Sunday, should the anticipated arrival of Hurricane Hanna
force a rain date).

"Every year we order more oysters — and every year, we seem to run out
before the picnic ends," Gaydos said, chuckling.

Oysters are just a part of what's drawn so many people to this church event.

There's a special old-timey, relaxed and welcoming feel to the picnic
that you don't often find at public events these days.

The picnic is straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting:

People of all ages set their lawn chairs around the stage and chat
throughout the day, eating oysters, hot dogs, powdered funnel cakes
and other picnic favorites while listening to bluegrass gospel and
swing bands.

Couples spontaneously stand and dance to toe-tapping tunes like Glenn
Miller's "In the Mood."

Neighbors meet and chat amiably as they wait in lines for their turn
to enjoy the oyster feed.

And all the while, you can hear children's laughter as they run and
play in the background.

It's a genuine slice of Americana — one that is near and dear to the
hearts of many local residents, said LouAnn Pullen of Salforville, one
of the event's organizers and the church's secretary.

"I literally grew up with this picnic," explained Pullen, 55. "There
are so many stories I could tell you."

She remembers the time her father, 81-year-old Harold Oelschlager of
Salfordville (who's never missed a picnic), learned that one of his
daughters actually scheduled her marriage for the same day as the
oyster feed.

Not to be denied his annual portion of Goshenhoppen's famous stew, he
somehow figured out a way to give away the bride and stop by the
church for a quick bite.

Gaydos has his share of stories, too.

An elderly church member once told him that, in the 1920s, an airplane
began circling the picnic and landed in a nearby field, much to the
amazement of the crowd, which descended on the pilot as if he were a
celebrity and treated him to a royal feast of oysters.

While most picnickers arrive by car these days, trains and horse-drawn
wagons once brought people by the hundreds and thousands from around
the greater Philadelphia area to this event, Pullen said.

Traces of bygone picnics remain to this day.

If you look closely enough, you can still find oyster shells from
years past all over the picnic grounds, she added.

"This is one of the oldest community events around," Pullen said.

Oyster supper 74 and still going strong

TURBOTVILLE — Once again, Bill Webb is doing his part to maintain a 74-year tradition at Zion Lutheran Church.

The Milton resident is organizing the 74th annual men's oyster dinner at the Paradise Street church on Tuesday evening.

A Chef Boyardee retiree, born and raised in Turbotville, Mr. Webb has managed the myriad details necessary for a smooth supper for the past 13 years, and he's got it down to a science. In a spiral-bound notebook, he keeps track of everything he needs to know. He's got the recipe for the oyster stew, the list of ingredients required, phone numbers of his helpers and the count of attendees each year.

"I'll be at the church around 2 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon to get started," he said.

On his shopping list are 21 gallons of oysters, 48 pounds of hard oyster crackers, 55 pound of pepper cabbage, 40 gallons of milk, 40 pounds of cheese, and "25 or 30 pies made by the church ladies."

"We always get 21 gallons of oysters, and no matter how many come, that's always enough," he said.

By 4 p.m., the kitchen crew will be in the church kitchen, heating the milk and other ingredients that make the oyster stew. Another crew will be shucking more oyster, placing the slippery bivalves on plates for those who take their oysters raw. Several Boy Scouts help out setting up chairs and tables.

"We have to have everything ready," said Mr. Webb.

He explained that the men's oyster dinner dates to 1934.

"The year before, the Rev. Russell Flowers started a Men's Brotherhood group at the church," he said. "And the next year they started the oyster supper as a men's fellowship event."

The supper has traditionally been a men's event, he said, but a few women do come with their husbands.

The church secretary sends out invitation letters to churches all over the region, Mr. Webb said, and men come from as far away as Selinsgrove, Mifflinburg, Bloomsburg and Williamsport.

Mr. Webb heads up a team of about 20 people who put the supper on, cooking the stew, serving it, along with plates of raw oysters, pepper cabbage, coffee, tea, water and soda and homemade pie for dessert.

"Some of the follows who come bring their own sauce to put on their raw oysters," he said, laughing. "Some sort of secret concoction, I guess."

"We used to have a roll call, just to see where people came from, but it got too lengthy," he said. "Back in the 70s, we would have men from about 50 churches, not just Lutherans, but Methodists, Baptists and others as well. There aren't that many any more."

Nevertheless, attendance at the supper ranges from 150 to over 200, depending on the weather.

"Last year, we only had about 165 because of the weather, but we still got rid of everything," he said.

According to Mr. Webb, some of those who attend ask as they come in the door to buy leftovers.

"One guy will ask for a pint of oysters, another wants a quart, or they want the leftover pepper cabbage or a pie," he said.

The dinner starts at 6:30, and by 7:45, everyone has eaten. A speaker or a short entertainment follows, and by about 8:30, everyone is on their way home, Mr. Webb said.

"We work in the kitchen to clean up as we go, so we're usually out by 9:30 ourselves," he said.

This year's entertainment is Carl and Opal Schleppy of Muncy, who sing and tell jokes, Mr. Webb said. Mr. Schleppy has attended the supper for a number of years. In past years, Mr. Webb has had a state trooper, a game protector and a number of musicians provide the entertainment.

"I've been going to the supper for about 20 years," Mr. Webb said. "There are others who have been coming for longer than that. It's a ritual for some of them."

In past years, admission to the dinner was by donation, but for the past couple of years, the price has been set at $11. Mr. Webb said the price has been increased as necessary from $7 when he first started managing the dinner.

"We don't do it to make money," he said. "I'm glad to break even. I've never gone over my budget, and most years we make a bit. At least we pay for the electric bill."

Oyster Dinner Review: Union Fire Company No. 1 Oxford, PA

Today we ventured out of our normal oystering grounds (South Jersey) to try the Union Fire Company No. 1 oyster and ham dinner in Oxford, PA.

The hall looked as if it has been recently updated and was very clean and roomy.

We were uncertain about the buffet style meal; we prefer homestyle dinners where platter after platter of oysters are brought to your table.

The oysters were also larger than we prefer, but this did not stop us from eating our fair share!

The creamed mushrooms was a dish we had never encountered and seemed appropriate for mushroom country.

And a rousing endorsement for the homemade dessert buffet...I had a slice of Red Velvet Cake with cream cheese icing, while Basel Fridge and Fizzy Merlot split Angelfood Cake and a Brownie.

All in all the Union Fire Company No. 1 does a good job and their firemen are very chivalrous as one helped Basel Fridge put on her coat!

The gates to “Oyster Fest” open at 10:30 am with free parking available.Oysters are sold by the bucket (approximately 3-4 dozen) for market value and served with cocktail sauce and crackers. You can BYO knife and glove or you can purchase them at the event. Beer, soft drinks and other beverages will be sold.Besides fresh oysters , other food will be available from some of the area’s popular restaurants.

Activities include: the “Oyster Shucking Contest”, the “Oyster Eating Contest” and local live entertainment. Also, the winner of the “Oyster Recipe Contest” will be announced.Proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House, Hollings Cancer Center, Travel Council and Charleston County Science Materials Resource Center.

Advance tickets for the 25th Annual Oyster Festival will sell for $10.00 and will be available at all Charleston area Applebee’s Restaurants and through the Association Office. Tickets can also be purchased at the event for $12.00 (kids 10 and younger are admitted free when accompanied with an adult).

Quarryville Lions Club will host their annual Ham and Oyster Dinner on
Saturday, November 10 from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Solanco High School
cafeteria and this year's event promises to be better than ever due to
the addition of a silent auction. Patrons will have the opportunity to
bid on a variety of items that have been donated by local businesses
so that the Lions can raise additional money to help fund community
programs that aid those in need.

A few of the items to be auctioned include a recliner chair, an oak
telephone stand, Barnstormers box seats, a truckload of mulch, a large
potted plant and gift certificates.

Due to the popularity of the dinner, it is recommended that tickets be
purchased in advance from Quarryville Lions Club members. Adult
tickets for the all-you-can-eat dinner cost $16. Children under 12
cost $10. Some tickets will be available at the door.

There is no cost to participate in the silent auction. The high
bidders can pay for the items at the time of pickup. High bidders will
be called at the end of the auction and items can be picked up that
evening or other arrangements can be made.

The Lions will also be collecting new, unwrapped items appropriate for
teenage boys and girls. All donated items will be given to the
Quarryville Community Action Program for distribution to needy
youngsters at Christmas. The community's support of one or all of
these events is greatly appreciated.
